Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum : August 16th, 2014

The Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was constructed between the years of 1858 and 1881 in Weston, West Virginia ,and is known for being the largest hand-cut Stone Masonry building in North America. Prior to it's years as an asylum the building changed hands various times during the civil war during it's construction. During it's years of operation the building was used to treat mental illness ,and was known to use treatments such as "electroshock" and the "lobotomy" on it's patients in hopes to cure them from their mental conditions . The original plan was for the building to hold 250 patients.... however over time it became overcrowded and housed nearly 2,400. The building closed it's doors in 1994 after changes in the treatments of mental health and the overall deterioration of the building. The building has since become well known for it's claims of paranormal activity. There have been several reports of shadow figures, disembodied voices, and even physical attacks inside of the building.

2014 has been an interesting year for the C-Bus Paranormal team as we have added a few new members ,and have a had several multi-investigation weekends that have made a few of the cases this year pretty mentally/physically taxing. This case would be no different as we would be investigating the "Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum" on Saturday night ,and then "Prospect Place" on the following Sunday. On this investigation we would have investigators Jeff Cole, Christopher Oles, and myself. We would then change to a different crew for the following nights case. The Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is a monster building ,and we would due our best in trying to capture activity throughout this historic asylum. As we checked into our hotel for the evening we found it kind of amusing that it was located next door to an enormous cemetery.

The investigation would certainly have it's challenges in obtaining evidence. The Asylum is literally in downtown Weston ,and there are a few bars in the area that stay in operation until about 2:00am. This would lead to possible outside contamination during parts of the night. There was also the challenge of dealing with other investigators as this was a public investigation. However there wasn't a large amount of people in the building (thankfully) ,and the people were separated into different groups as the medical buildings were also available for investigation on this night. We would have the occasional yelling from outside ,or the sounds of people walking on the floors above. However it was pretty easy to distinguish as we made our rounds throughout the building.

During the course of the night we learned about several of the former patients such as the "Wildman Of West Virginia" ,and another patient that literally murdered another patient with a bed post. In this gruesome act the patient put the victims head under a bed post ,and literally kept jumping on the mattress until the post went through the victims skull. The patient later stated during questioning that he was upset because the victim had been "stealing his air". Despite it's gruesome past the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum has a lot of history within it's walls ,and it was interesting to hear statements from some of the volunteers on their experiences in the building. The lower level of the building has an art section featuring several pieces of artwork from past patients. It's truly a strange site to behold. At some point the team will be making a return visit to investigate the administration and medical buildings that surround the main structure on the property.

Overall the location was amazing. However much like most of our investigations this year ... the activity seemed a bit quiet. There are several factors and theories that many people have on why paranormal activity occurs when it does. Perhaps the conditions are environmental ,or it might even have do with timing of the event. Whatever the case might be it seems that 2014 hasn't been nearly as active as 2013 for our team. This has been a consistent pattern throughout most of the year.
